$3000 colt wins at The Valley

In an industry where money surely talks colt Condo's Express has beaten the odds, the bargain buy bursting through late to claim the first race at The Valley on Saturday.

The win, at the first meeting held at the track since March, took Condo's Express' earnings beyond $90,000 - some 30 times his yearling price - and judging by the way he won the race, plenty more is in store.

Condo's Express cost owner Gary Condon just $3000 at the Scone Select Yearling sale and so connections were already up on their purchase when the Rubick colt ran second, earning $3910, on debut at Wangaratta in June.

Those numbers are a far cry from the value of the two horses he beat on Saturday.

The runner-up, Asateer, is by the all-conquering I Am Invincible and is raced by his breeder Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa after he failed to sell at the Gold Coast Magic Millions sale when he fell $60,000 short of a $400,000 reserve.

The third horse, Memphis Rock, did not go through the sale ring but she is by super sire Fastnet Rock and three of her siblings - Sia, Lake Geneva and Irish Sea - all fetched $1 million or more when sold as yearlings.

After settling back at the tail of the field Linda Meech, who replaced an overweight Michael Walker for the ride, sent Condo's Express ($8.50) through a narrow gap in the straight and he ran away to win by a length from Asateer ($5.50), with Memphis Rock ($5.50) third just ahead of the $2.60 favourite Alburq.

Trainer Richard Laming said Condo's Express had done enough in his first preparation with four starts for a win and three seconds and that he will send him to the paddock satisfied the horse can re-emerge later this year a contender for better races.
