Concensus wins Sunline Stakes at The Valley (Image: Racing Photos)
Stephen McKee has only been back to The Valley once since the great days of his past champion Sunline but from his view from the winner’s stall on Friday night, nothing much has changed.
McKee was standing in the stall checking out the surroundings after his mare Consensus caused a boilover at $26 in the race named after the three-time Australasian champion.
‘’She was actually heading up to Sydney and we had the Ranvet picked out for her but it’s just too wet in Sydney and so we looked at this race and thought we’d better go for it,’’ McKee said.
McKee trained Sunline in partnership with his father Trevor to win both the 1999 and 2000 Cox Plates.
Former Kiwi rider Michael Walker completed the New Zealand flavour when he punched the $26 chance home in the $200,000 race to narrowly over the $2.10 favourite Spanish Reef with Kenedna ($21) close-up in third place.
