Age does not weary Rock Magic

Rock Magic might be one of the veterans of Friday night's Moir Stakes field but somehow the Perth horse is managing to reverse the effects of ageing.

The eight-year-old runs first-up in the $500,000 Group 1 and his trainer Chris Gangemi explained he put the sprinter on the plane for Melbourne after he yet again showed that his best racing campaign might still be in front of him.

"When we first got him, he was a nice horse but dead-set in the last three or four preparations, every time we put him out and bring him back, he comes back better ever time," Gangemi said.

"It sounds silly but I think he's come back better again so hopefully he's still got another big win in him."

Gangemi stuck his toe in the Melbourne waters in the autumn when Rock Magic endured a tough run when a close-up fourth in the G1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley and Gangemi said that run was good enough for the owners to want to return to Melbourne for a Spring Carnival.

"We were very happy with his run that day," he said. "If he had a bit more luck in the run he may have gone very close but it was still a very good run and the owners were rapt with the run.

"He's had a break and had a couple of races back in Perth since then and he's a good, fresh horse, a good 1000-metre horse, he handles the Valley and so hopefully he can run a big race for us on Friday night.

"It's a red-hot field so we're not going there expecting to win by any means but if he has even luck in running and gets every chance and then can run first four or five then all the owners will be rapt as it is such a red-hot field."

Rock Magic has raced 39 times for 14 wins and more than $1 million in prizemoney and Gangemi said this spring could be his most profitable as he also plans to race the horse back in Perth over the Summer Carnival.

"There's obviously the Manikato here and the Darley at Flemington this spring if he's showing us he's up to the level," Gangemi said.

"There's a race two weeks after the Moir in the Schillaci at Caulfield and it's probably a nice race for him because hopefully all the big, big guns will be in The Everest (at Randwick) on that day," he said.

"Ultimately, we'd like to go back for the Winterbottom. He ran third last year coming off a terrible lead-in so we'd love to get him to that race in good shape and see how he performs."
