Trent Edmonds is Group 1 dreaming this spring and is using a proven pathway to achieve his ambition starting with the Paramount Liquor Carlyon Stakes.

"Alice" could take Edmonds to Wonderland

As a young trainer with eight horses in work, Pakenham-based horseman Trent Edmonds knows what stable star Extragalactic could do for his business.Edmonds is no stranger to success having co-trained Group 1 winners and travelling horses internationally and he knew launching a new stable interstate was going to be no easy task.Thankfully, the horse simply known around the stables as ‘Alice’, doesn’t know the weight on her shoulders as she kicks-off her spring preparation in the $200,000 Group 3 Paramount Liquor Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday.“Every trainer needs one horse to kick them off and I’ve lived that with being my Dad’s foreman so I’ve seen what a good horse and results can do,” Edmonds says.“When we won the Magic Millions with Houtzen we went from 40 horses to 70 very quickly and the business took off and sprouted wings.”Edmonds specced the daughter of Deep Field for what now seems a very modest $160,000 as a yearling with his first bid at auction.His first horse to bring to Victoria, he recalls selling the final 5 per cent share on the tennis courts of Pakenham and it wouldn’t be long after her potential was on show for all to see.Country wins at Bairnsdale and Pakenham led to a city victory at Caulfield in April this year and just a month later she would start favourite in the $1 million Group 1 Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville.&nbsp;A race she was narrowly denied – and a long drive back to Victoria to plan for justice in the spring.“She obviously took giant strides last preparation and come up with a near miss in the Goodwood but we move on – that was last prep,” Edmonds lamented.“We had a long dinner on the marina in Glenelg that night and drowned our sorrows and had a long drive home the next day.“Within a couple of days of going to the paddock I worked out this plan – I wanted to be on the ball.“It’s a recipe that having the run under the belt and going to the big the Group 1 a few weeks later obviously works and we will be there ticking all the boxes.”That Group 1 is the Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes on September 5 and Edmonds is following the exact pathway of Baraqiel and Mornington Glory both used to deliver success at the highest level.So what does Edmonds expect from Extragalactic on Saturday?“Largely she’s untapped and she hasn’t won a stakes race yet, so I want to tick that box,” Edmonds said.“She’s got improvement to come but I have her forward enough to be really competitive.“The Moir is when she will be bang on ready to go but it’s a stakes race and she is a filly so its important she can go and win.And if ‘Alice’ can take that next step on Saturday, Edmonds might just find himself heading down the rabbit hole to a very different kind of Wonderland.

The Valley will once again play host to a leg of the National Pony Racing Series, with the Victorian event set to take place on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, Saturday 22 March.A collaboration between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC), the series is designed to educate young riders on careers in the racing and breeding industry, giving them a taste of professional competition on major racedays.The series features six race meetings across Australia, culminating in the national finals in June. Before the Victorian leg, Ballarat hosted a Jumpstart weekend, where participants received riding instruction, horse health education, career insights, and rider fitness training.&nbsp;In preparation for their big moment on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, competitors will also take part in a training day at The Valley to familiarise themselves with the track.On Saturday, two pony races will be held for state finalists aged 9 to 15. The first, over 450m at 11:30 am, is for ponies not exceeding 12.2hh, while the second, over 700m, is for ponies not exceeding 14hh. That event will take place following Race 3 on the card at 1:30 pm.&nbsp;Moonee Valley Racing Club has enjoyed its association with TIC and Pony Club Australia, providing young riders with the opportunity to gain experience on a major racing stage. The Valley hosted a leg of the first National Pony Racing Series in 2023, and last year on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day held a Shetland Pony Race.With the next generation of riders set to take centre stage once again, The Valley looks forward to another thrilling chapter in this growing series.
