Hedged has beaten a pair of Group 1 winners to with the G2 contest under lights at Pakenham

Million dollar man wins Clamms Seafood Australia Stakes

Gavin Bedggood and Harry Coffey were the toast of Pakenham last Friday evening when Hedged claimed the $350,000 G2 Clamms Seafood Australia Stakes (1200m).The race was the first ever Group 2 contest conducted at Pakenham as The Valley undergoes its once-in-a-generation transformation, a race that has previously seen the likes of Black Caviar raise the trophy.The past five winners of the Australia Stakes have all gone onto Group 1 glory in Streets of Avalon, Marabi, Jigsaw, Veight and Schwarz all now winners at the highest level and connections Roll The Dice Racing will be hoping Hedged can do the same.A dominant winner of the Listed Christmas Stakes on Boxing Day, the son of Capitalist bounced backed to form leaving Group 1 winners Veight and War Machine behind him.A $140,000 yearling purchase, last weeks victory took the five-year-olds prizemoney past $1 million.Having only ridden the gelding in his last three starts, Harry Coffey has now ridden Hedged to the biggest two victories in his career.“I’ve had three rides on him for two wins and people say ‘you must have the key to him’,” Coffey said.“But he is very unique - he is a bit of an unusual individual.“Both times he has won he has been dynamic and ran right through the line which has been when he’s been outside of horses.”It was another Group success in the training career of Gavin Bedggood, who trained his maiden Group 1 winner at The Valley with Mornington Glory at The Valley in the 2024 Moir Stakes.

The Valley will once again play host to a leg of the National Pony Racing Series, with the Victorian event set to take place on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, Saturday 22 March.A collaboration between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC), the series is designed to educate young riders on careers in the racing and breeding industry, giving them a taste of professional competition on major racedays.The series features six race meetings across Australia, culminating in the national finals in June. Before the Victorian leg, Ballarat hosted a Jumpstart weekend, where participants received riding instruction, horse health education, career insights, and rider fitness training.&nbsp;In preparation for their big moment on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, competitors will also take part in a training day at The Valley to familiarise themselves with the track.On Saturday, two pony races will be held for state finalists aged 9 to 15. The first, over 450m at 11:30 am, is for ponies not exceeding 12.2hh, while the second, over 700m, is for ponies not exceeding 14hh. That event will take place following Race 3 on the card at 1:30 pm.&nbsp;Moonee Valley Racing Club has enjoyed its association with TIC and Pony Club Australia, providing young riders with the opportunity to gain experience on a major racing stage. The Valley hosted a leg of the first National Pony Racing Series in 2023, and last year on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day held a Shetland Pony Race.With the next generation of riders set to take centre stage once again, The Valley looks forward to another thrilling chapter in this growing series.
