The MVRC in conjunction with Alderson Racing and their stable star Jigsaw have claimed the $1 million Ladbrokes Meteorite.

Jigsaw powers MVRC to Meteorite glory

The Moonee Valley Racing Club in conjunction with Alderson Racing and their stable star Jigsaw have claimed the $1 million Ladbrokes Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne on Saturday, with a dominant all-the-way victory.Granted the Club’s slot in part one of the Southside Racing series after his Group 2 win in the Cirka McEwen Stakes on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day, Logan Bates ensured the winning streak continued for the duo with another front running masterclass resulting in a hat-trick of wins.The seven-year-old is racing in career best form and took his earnings to over $1.8 million in a career which started back in January 2021 with a debut victory at Geelong.“It’s a really special moment… it’s amazing and such a thrill,” Cindy Alderson said.“I’d like to thank Moonee Valley for the opportunity to get in here and their colours look pretty good and it’s just a great day – one I will remember.”Jigsaw carried a combined set of silks incorporating the MVRC logo with the famous Alderson colours which have been a large part of the history of Cranbourne.The MVRC are delighted to be custodians of the impressive Meteorite trophy for the next twelve months.“It was a fantastic result for the Club and connections,” MVRC CEO Michael Browell said.“With the relationship we’ve got in place with Ladbrokes but also with Southside Racing hosting so many of our transferred meetings through the closure period, we were happy to support them.“Then we had to turn our mind to how you select the right horse and with the changes to our sprinting program of course with the Manikato and Moir Stakes running earlier, then the McEwen becoming the feature spring on Cox Plate Day.“We are a bit new to this slot game but to be able to bring the McEwen winner in from Cox Plate Day certainly gave us a strong hand.“We were confident going in we had the right horse.”2024 McEwen Stakes winner Baraqiel, who this year went on to win the Group 1 Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes at The Valley, finished third in the MVRC’s Meteorite slot last year.Attention now turns to the $1 million Supernova at Pakenham on December 13 with the MVRC shortlisting candidates to take the Club’s slot in the 1400 metre contest.The MVRC currently leads the 2025 Slot Holder Bonus with 14 points.

Ladbrokes Cox Plate Living Legends Series

The Valley will once again play host to a leg of the National Pony Racing Series, with the Victorian event set to take place on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, Saturday 22 March.A collaboration between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC), the series is designed to educate young riders on careers in the racing and breeding industry, giving them a taste of professional competition on major racedays.The series features six race meetings across Australia, culminating in the national finals in June. Before the Victorian leg, Ballarat hosted a Jumpstart weekend, where participants received riding instruction, horse health education, career insights, and rider fitness training.&nbsp;In preparation for their big moment on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, competitors will also take part in a training day at The Valley to familiarise themselves with the track.On Saturday, two pony races will be held for state finalists aged 9 to 15. The first, over 450m at 11:30 am, is for ponies not exceeding 12.2hh, while the second, over 700m, is for ponies not exceeding 14hh. That event will take place following Race 3 on the card at 1:30 pm.&nbsp;Moonee Valley Racing Club has enjoyed its association with TIC and Pony Club Australia, providing young riders with the opportunity to gain experience on a major racing stage. The Valley hosted a leg of the first National Pony Racing Series in 2023, and last year on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day held a Shetland Pony Race.With the next generation of riders set to take centre stage once again, The Valley looks forward to another thrilling chapter in this growing series.
