Opie: Imperatriz the best I've ridden

Champion New Zealand jockey Opie Bossin has labelled Imperatriz as the best horse he's ridden after her Manikato Stakes domination at The Valley on Saturday.

The Mark Walker-trained mare claimed the Moonee Valley sprint triple crown with her Manikato win, having also won the Moir Stakes and William Reid Stakes this year.

After jumping well, Bosson was forced to go to the front. But it was never a bother, kicking away on the turn to record  a 3.25 length win.

When asked if Imperatriz is the best horse he has ridden, Bosson said: “She is, by far. I’ve said it a million times (that) I’ve never ridden a horse that can just switch off and go back when you want it.

"More to come, I think."

Bosson, who has ridden nearly 100 Group 1 winners, admitted he was feeling the nerves before the Manikato.

"I don’t usually get too nervous but today I was ‘walking the box’ a bit this morning and didn’t want to talk too much," he said.

“It got to me a little bit but she pulled me through it.

“She jumped and put herself there today. I gave her a little squeeze to clear the first two horses and then I thought well I’m going leave her here. As soon as she got there she switched off and changed legs at the right time and round the home bend she kept coming up underneath me and changing legs.

“I had to push the button, really.”

Walker said:  “It is great for the ownership who have been so understanding about not going to Sydney. We were thinking about her longevity and it is a big thrill.

“I think this mare is keeping Opie in the saddle as well. He is such an important part of our team as well.”
