Moir on Gollan's mind

The Moir Stakes on September 29 looms as the next target for Queensland sprinter Zoustyle, following his recent fourth placing in the McEwen Stakes.

The Tony Gollan-trained veteran was ridden by Damien Oliver and finished behind Imperatriz, Rothfire and Giga Kick, in a comparable performance to what he produced in the same race last year, where he was narrowly beaten by Rothfire.

"I thought he ran as good as probably what he did last year," Gollan said.

"The way the track played, it favoured horses swooping out off the fence, which is not really his pattern; he's a go-forward, on-speed sort of horse.

"Obviously, they ran a track record and they were three very good horses in front of him.

"Ollie was comfortable that he was as good as what he was last year.

"We're under no illusion that as an eight-year-old, he's not going to be any better, if we can just keep him as good, there's hopefully a chance at some stage during the carnival that we can find our race.

"We'll go along a very similar route to what we did last spring, we didn't win a race last spring, but he was thereabouts all carnival.

"I'm just hoping for something the same and hopefully a win can fall his way at some point during the carnival."

Zoustyle will return to Moonee Valley on AFL Grand Final Eve attempting to finish a couple of places better than the 2022 Moir Stakes, where he crossed the line behind Coolangatta and Bella Nipotina.

"We don't have a lot of options outside of that, we'd have to wait five or six weeks if we didn't want to go there, so at this point in time, we'll head towards the Moir," Gollan said.

"You never know, we might get a track that plays more to our style of racing, like Moonee Valley was playing there a few weeks back! We never know what we might get on that night.

"He's obviously a very good 1000-metre horse and you know he's going to present in the same order or a touch better than what he was the other day.

"He's going to be competitive in all these races."

Sportsbet has Zoustyle at $26 for the Moir Stakes.
