Mutinous set to soar in Alinta Energy Lunar New Year Sprint

By Nick Hluchaniuk The sparks will be flying at The Valley for Ladbrokes Friday Night Lights with a race to be run over the sprint trip of 888m for the first time at the track in celebration of Lunar New Year. The Alinta Energy Lunar New Year Sprint over the unique distance will be a highlight on the eight-race card, with ‘8’ considered to be one of the luckiest numbers in Chinese culture.Luck has already gone the way of Mutinous from the Enver Jusufovic stable, coming up with the prized inside draw for the dash. The in-form sprinter has had recent success at The Valley, taking out Heat 7 of the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge in December, recording the fastest time over the 955m for the season when putting three lengths on his rivals.“I think the circuit really suits him,” Jusufovic said.“I’m hoping barrier one will be advantageous. But he’s got to jump well to be in front because … I’m sure that’s where eight of the others want to be in the run too.”His victory at The Valley in early December made it two straight for the five-year-old by Rich Enuff, before a last start second at Cranbourne where he was forced to make a wide run before the turn.“He had a little break following his last run. He looks well, he’s sort of held his fitness to a certain extent, whatever he does he’ll improve on, but he’s ready to go.”“He had to carry 62.5kg, and missing the start, it certainly didn’t help him. Then he probably got to the front just a little bit early. I thought the run was commendable.”Jusufovic also has exciting galloper Pinstriped close to a return. The four-year-old is among the nominations for next month’s All-Star Mile at The Valley.“He’s going well. He’s doing strong pacework at the moment,” Jusufovic said.“Physically he looks fantastic, a lot bigger and stronger now.“I’m getting down to the business end now regarding his trackwork. I’ll know in another week or so exactly where I’m going.”The Alinta Energy Lunar New Year Sprint is race four on the card and will jump at 7:45pm AEDT.

The Valley will once again play host to a leg of the National Pony Racing Series, with the Victorian event set to take place on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, Saturday 22 March.A collaboration between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC), the series is designed to educate young riders on careers in the racing and breeding industry, giving them a taste of professional competition on major racedays. The series features six race meetings across Australia, culminating in the national finals in June. Before the Victorian leg, Ballarat hosted a Jumpstart weekend, where participants received riding instruction, horse health education, career insights, and rider fitness training. In preparation for their big moment on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day, competitors will also take part in a training day at The Valley to familiarise themselves with the track. On Saturday, two pony races will be held for state finalists aged 9 to 15. The first, over 450m at 11:30 am, is for ponies not exceeding 12.2hh, while the second, over 700m, is for ponies not exceeding 14hh. That event will take place following Race 3 on the card at 1:30 pm. Moonee Valley Racing Club has enjoyed its association with TIC and Pony Club Australia, providing young riders with the opportunity to gain experience on a major racing stage. The Valley hosted a leg of the first National Pony Racing Series in 2023, and last year on 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes Day held a Shetland Pony Race. With the next generation of riders set to take centre stage once again, The Valley looks forward to another thrilling chapter in this growing series.
