Meagher reflects ahead of Pippie swansong

Chris Meagher will close one of the most exciting chapters of his career in racing when speed machine Pippie has her final start for the stable in Friday night's William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley.

A dual Group 1 winner of more than $1.2 million in prizemoney, the daughter of Written Tycoon will be one of the star attractions at the upcoming Inglis Chairmans Sale in Sydney.

The Mornington-based trainer thought he had something special when Pippie made her first appearances at the jumpouts in the early months of 2018, and those suspicions were soon confirmed with a five-length debut romp at Cranbourne, when she firmed from an opening quote of $26 to start $4.60.

Jockey Noel Callow was aboard on debut and will reunite with the mare for only the second time since in her swansong G1.

Meagher said that regardless of Friday night's result, he is immensely proud Pippie and the job his staff have done to produce her for six career wins, including the 2020 Oakleigh Plate and 2020 Moir Stakes.

"The Galaxy was our main target but with the rain in Sydney we decided to come back to The Valley, which we're certainly not afraid of," Meagher said.

"We are mindful of the fact it's a Group 1 weight-for-age race over 1200m - ideally we would've loved 1100m, but she is a two-time winner over 1200m.

"If he (Callow) can control her speed and kick off the corner, they're certainly going to know she's there.

"She's done more than we've asked her to do throughout her career and more than we ever expected her to do.

"To win two Group 1 races, we're certainly very proud of what she's been able to achieve and she's going to leave a big hole in our stable.

"Simon Wells looks after her and I don't think Winx would've been looked after better - he knows every little inch about her and picks out any little thing that's not part of her characteristics.

"It will be sad and emotional when she leaves but we always knew that, in time, she'd be heading off to the breeding barn."
