Brisbourne's Diamond wins at $41

There is little chance Ben Brisbourne will ever forget his first metropolitan Saturday winner after $41 bolter Fontein Diamond scored on All-Star Mile Day at The Valley in the first ever whip-limited race to be staged in the city in Victoria.

"My first one, and on All-Star Mile Day," Brisbourne said after the upset win of the mare in the Country Mile Series Final. "This is our All-Star Mile for the country trainers.

"It'll mean more to me winning this race than for whoever wins The All-Star Mile, I promise you.

"It's a massive thrill for the stable. I've got such a good team at home. They all deserve it."

The Country Mile Final was the first metropolitan race staged where jockeys were permitted to only hit their mount five times across the entire race after five such series races on country tracks over the past six weeks.

After taking up a forward position for jockey Patrick Moloney, Fontein Diamond skipped clear into the home straight and held a length-and-a-half margin on the line over Irish Playboy ($9), with a short half-head to Fiorente Lass ($8.50) in third.

Moloney was happy to play his part: "It's obviously fantastic for his small but growing team. He's a really up-and-coming young trainer. The first ride I had for him was on this girl in one of the heat races. She won really well and then we came here today and everything was fantastic.

"Coming into the straight I thought 'I'm bolting here, I'm getting here a bit soon'. She was a little bit suspect over the mile, but she obviously liked the conditions and a few others didn't and we got the job done."

After a total of five penalties were handed out for overuse of the whip in the lead-up races to the final, no fines or suspensions were incurred by Saturday's riders.
