Manikato honoured as Tote Park launched

Winx isn't the only champion to be honoured as part of The Valley's $2 billion redevelopment, with a memorial for the legendary Manikato also taking pride of place in the new Tote Park.

Tote Park, a 5000 square-metre green space to be used by both racing participants and the wider community, was officially launched at The Valley on Friday.

While Winx's statue was unveiled on Cox Plate Day in October, a redeveloped memorial to Manikato was officially displayed for the first time, with the champion's regular jockey Gary Willetts on hand to help commemorate the legendary sprinter-miler at his final resting place.

Manikato was a legend of Moonee Valley in the 1970s and 1980s, having won eight races at the track including five-straight victories in the William Reid Stakes.

"It's a fantastic honour to him, he really was a champion who had a great will to win and he loved racing here at Moonee Valley, as did I," Willetts said.

Tote Park is the new entrance to The Valley course, and is also available for community events and activities, with the Moonee Valley Racing Club hoping the open space will continue to help the racecourse and wider public mix.

The green space includes hundreds of plants and is situated in front of the original 1931 tote building on the site, the oldest of its kind in Australia.

"We're so excited to launch Tote Park, the club has been a part of the local community for around 140 years, so we're thrilled to be able to now have this space to offer for the benefit of the community," said MVRC Chairman Don Casboult.

"It is a great representation of the old and the new, the history and the heritage of our club.

"It's the beginning of our masterplan and it's very special to have this step complete with a brand-new entrance to the club and the special tributes to legends of our track in Winx and Manikato."
