Meteorite may seek Valley redemption

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Meteorite could be given the chance to redeem himself at Moonee Valley this Saturday after joining an unwanted statistic last week.

Meteorite ($1.50 favourite) unsuccessfully attempted to lead throughout in the sixth heat of the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge over 955 metres at Moonee Valley last Friday night.

The Deep Field four-year-old gelding crossed to the rail from the outside barrier in the field of four but was overrun by Grandview Avenue ($7.50) who settled at his girth and scored by a length, winning in a time of 54.74 seconds.

In failing to secure victory, Meteorite became the seventh horse with a starting price of $1.55 or less to lose this year across Melbourne's metropolitan meetings.

Incredibly, just three horses have started long odds-on this year and won, Ancestry, How Womantic and Russian Camelot, the latter also losing at $1.40 in the G1 Neds Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Calvin McEvoy over the weekend in the aftermath of Meteorite's defeat suggested he may back up in Saturday's $140,000 Listed Fiorente @ Sun Stud Carlyon Stakes (1000m), one of two stakes races rescheduled after their original date in August was washed out.

Well see how he comes through his run," McEvoy said. "Ive had a plan that if he won then wed go there. Although he didnt win hes still very well.

Nominations for Saturday's nine-race card at Moonee Valley, which also includes the $140,000 Listed McMahon's Dairy McKenzie Stakes (1200m), will be released after midday on Monday.
