Age won't stop Rock Magic chasing G1 glory

Ten-year-old gelding Rock Magic will pursue Group 1 glory in Victoria this week in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on Friday night.

G1-placed on two occasions, the stable believes he's going as well as ever and is right in the mix to take out the $500,000 event.

"He's an unbelievable horse, he's absolutely humming and he's almost 11 now,” Gangemi Racing General Manager Michael Gangemi said.

"We are amazed with how well he continues to go, his work on Saturday was some of his best yet."

Fourth in the G1 Manikato Stakes late last year, 'Rocky' as he is known around the stable, choked down in the G1 VRC Classic before finishing third in the G1 Winterbottom Stakes back in Western Australia.

"We were so proud of his effort at The Valley last prep before he choked down at Flemington, his run in the Winterbottom was sensational and we just need some luck on Friday night," he said.

Rock Magic received the visitor's draw and will jump from the widest barrier on Friday, but Gangemi believes that may not be as bad as first thought.

"We know what he can do when he's held up and then allowed to have a crack at them late," he said.

"His turn of foot is as good as I've seen, so we'll just drop him out the back and let him have the last go at them."

Rock Magic finished fourth in the G1 William Reid in 2017, back when his biggest rivals come Friday night, Loving Gaby and Bivouac, were only a few months old.

"It's amazing to think Rocky had already competed in a Group 1 before Loving Gaby and Bivouac were even born, now we need to beat them on Friday," Gangemi laughed.

"It just shows his durability and determination, he's been a once-in-a-lifetime horse for us and we hope he can get the Group 1 he deserves before he retires."
