McEvoys plan three-prong Typhoon attack

The McEvoy stable will send a three-pronged attack into the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Grand Scholar and Sisstar will look to add more black type to their resumes, while Oh Please Dianna will look for her first feature victory to add to her impressive pedigree.

Grand Scholar, a filly by Wandjina, has had two runs at the Valley for two victories, her most recent by six lengths.

Following that dominant victory, she went to the Gold Coast and failed, but after a freshen-up co-trainer Calvin McEvoy expects a much-improved performance.

“We’ve taken her to Queensland twice now and she clearly just doesn’t go on that leg,”  McEvoy said.

“We took her back to Angaston, she freshened-up at the farm, travelled back to Melbourne last week and I thought her work was really good this morning.

“She still looks a little big, so she’ll improve out of the run and tighten up nicely.”

McEvoy is also optimistic that Group 3 winner, Sisstar, would be back to her best after a disappointing first-up run.

“Despite having no trial and facing testing conditions, she was well below par,” he said.

“She’s trained on nicely since that run at Caulfield and we’d expect a much better showing from her on Friday night.”

McEvoy confirmed that Mark Zahra will take the ride on Sisstar following his Group 1 success in the Lighting Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

“Zahra will ride her on Friday night, we’re excited to have him on board,” he said.

“He rode her this morning, she a hot filly, she’s hard work as you saw, but she had a good look around the Valley which is exactly what we wanted.”

Oh Please Dianna will be thrown into the deep end when she takes her place in the race, but McEvoy believes she is capable of surprising.

“It’s aggressive placement by us, but we wouldn’t be running her if we didn’t think she’d run well,” he said.

“She worked in blinkers this morning and we were really happy with what she did.

“She has a big pedigree being out of Karuta Queen, so if she can get some black type, she’s worth a lot of money.”

McEvoy confirmed that Meteorite will also step out Friday night in the three-year-old benchmark 70 over 1000m.

“He’s come back in great order, his jump outs have been good and his work this morning was strong,” he said.

“We’ve always thought a lot of him and we think he’ll go to the next level this preparation.”
