Chris Biggins with the 1992 W.S. Cox Plate

1992 WS Cox Plate trophy won by Super Impose auctioned for Bushfire Appeal

The treasured 1992 W.S. Cox Plate trophy won by Super Impose, in possession of managing owner Chris Biggins, is being auctioned to raise funds for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. All funds will be distributed directly by the ownership group to those impacted by the fires in the Gippsland area.

Super Impose was New Zealand-bred who was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2007. In a career spanning 74 starts, he won eight Group One races including the 1992 W.S. Cox Plate and a then Australasian record $5.6 million in prizemoney.

“I hope this treasured piece of racing history will raise a substantial amount of money for Victoria’s bushfire recovery,” says managing owner Chris Biggins.

“This famous trophy has taken pride of place in my private collection for 28 years, but I am willing to part with it so we can raise money to help fund new fire trucks, fences, infrastructure and drones to spot future Victorian fires.”

“The 1992 Cox Plate was probably the strongest field ever because every horse in it was a Group One winner and most of them were multiple Group One winners, which highlights just how good it was,’’ he said.

The 1992 W.S. Cox Plate field was one for the ages and was a truly classic edition. Won by Cox Plate immortal Super Impose, trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by Greg Hall, 33,028 people gasped when Palace Reign fell and star galloper Naturalism fell over the top of him. Greg Hall, three lengths off them and running wide with 700m to go, avoided the fall and went on to win by a head over Kinjite and Slight Chance in the history-making race.

“It’s a unique piece of sporting memorabilia and I commend Chris Biggins and the owners of Super Impose on the amazing gesture that will raise much needed funds for the bushfire appeal,” said Michael Browell, MVRC CEO

“Super Impose is a legend of our race and the 1992 W.S. Cox Plate will long be remembered as assembling one of the best fields we have ever seen”

“The Moonee Valley Racing Club are pleased to support Chris in his endeavours to raise as much money as possible and we hope to see some strong bidding”.
