He might have missed out on a $55,000 bonus but trainer Tony McEvoy was still all smiles following the successful return to racing of Desert Lashes, who took the final 55-second challenge race at The Valley on Friday night.
McEvoy’s mare had the time of 54.77 seconds to beat to land her trainer the bonus in the 17th and final sprint challenge for the season but even though she fell the best part of a second short, McEvoy was more than happy to take the win.
‘’She bled here on Cox Plate day last year so we’ve given her some time and she showed just what a good mare she is,’’ McEvoy explained.
‘’She won her first eight races so there’s no doubting her quality and it was great to see her come back and win with that authority.’’
The winner of the 55-second challenge was the Mornington trainer Logan McGill, who was forced to wait five months to collect the prize following his horse Written Choice’s blistering time on Cox Plate eve last spring.
Desert Lashes won her 10th race from just her 19th start at the odds of $3.60 after sitting outside the leader Plateau Gold and then putting the race away on the turn.
She had a three quarters of a length margin on the line over Belwazi ($4.80) with a length to Plateau Gold ($12) in third place.
McEvoy said he would now set the mare the goal of the group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes over 1200 metres at Morphettville on May 4.
