Trap For Fools' Cup attempt

Trap For Fools will be given the chance to make it to next month's Caulfield Cup after the former Perth horse again proved too good for his rivals at The Valley on Saturday.

Trainer Jarrod McLean was joined by rider Brad Rawiller in claiming the Caulfield Cup distance of 2400 metres held no fears for the five-year-old on-pacer, who made it back-to-back 2040-metre wins at The Valley with a sustained sprint from the 600m.

"I can't wait to see him at a mile-and-a-half," McLean declared when asked what he thought of a Caulfield Cup tilt.

"It's either the Naturalism (Stakes) or the JRA Cup back over this course but the thing about the Naturalism is that it gives you the ticket in."

The Group 3 Naturalism Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield on September 22 gives its winner a ballot-free run into the Caulfield Cup four weeks later.

Trap For Fools ($4.40 fav) overcame a tough run in front as he was pressured constantly by the wayward import Hush Writer before drawing clear to win by a length from the fast-finishing Yogi ($9) with two lengths to Bondeiger ($31) in third place.

McLean said while Trap For Fools had only once been tried at 2400m when he ran sixth in January's Perth Cup, the horse's previous trainer Lindsey Smith believed he had 'had enough' by the time the race came around.

Rawiller was also salivating at the prospect of a longer trip for Trap For Fools, who again dominated from the front.

He said the 2400-metre trip would mean he would simply have to put Trap For Fools on idle for 400m before unleashing his powerful sprint.
