Weir creates history at The Valley

All eyes were on The Valley on Wednesday July 13 when Gun Case provided Darren Weir with his 335th winner and the Commonwealth training record with 18 days remaining in the 2015/16 season.

Former Queensland trained sprinter Gun Case dominated from the front and made it three wins on end in the McMahon’s Dairy Handicap. While some had expected Weir to achieve that feat prior to Race 6 on the program, Weir needn’t raise a sweat when Ben Allen saluted 3½ lengths clear of his nearest rival.

In typical Weir style he was modest and looking to his 336th season success.

“Hopefully people stop mentioning it now; I was getting a bit sick of that”

“You don't get time to think about it, you go to the races, go home, get organised for the next day, go to bed, get up, and do it all again,” Weir explained.

It was fitting Weir wrote his name into the record books at The Valley, a course he has enjoyed more success at than any other this season. Having prepared 28 horses to victory here this season, he has trained 50% more metropolitan winners at The Valley than any other city racecourse – a career total of 120 winners.

In recent times Weir has written his name beside some of the courses most prestigious races with Lucky Hussler saluting in the 2014 Group 1 William Reid Stakes, while the now famous Prince of Penzance and Michelle Payne partnership took out the 2014 Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup.

May The Valley be home to plenty more winners for D.K Weir!
